Why Do You Do What You Do?

Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. I Corithians 3:13 KJV

This is a very humbling verse for every child of God. The Bible is very clear that the people of God will have to give an account for every word and deed. We must answer to our Maker for deeds done in the body whether good or evil. First we see in this verse that every man’s work will be made manifest. The word manifest means to be made known or to reveal. Things done in secret will be proclaimed from the moutain top. We can hide things from men now but in that day God will make all things known.

Secondly we see that the day will declare it. I believe this is in reference to the Judgement seat of Christ. This is judgement for the saved for how they built on the foundation of Jesus Christ. This will take place sometime between the rapture and the second coming of Christ. Lastly we see that the fire will reveal and try our works. In previous verses we see that a metaphor is used comparing our works to gold, silver, and precious stones which are materials that can not be burned up. These are works that are true and will last forever. There are also works that are likened to wood, hay, and stubble. These works are those that will burn because they were done to be seen of men. In Matthew 6:5 we see the reward of those who do things to be seen of men. They have it now and it will be burned by fire in that day.

I know a preacher who would really put on a show when visitors came to the church. He would shout and scream Amen. Then he would look around to see what they thought of him.

What spiritual immaturity.

So why do you and I do what we do? Amen.
